Dr. Kottilil Awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians (MACP) for Groundbreaking Clinical Research and Exceptional Mentorship
Shyam Kottilil, MBBS, PhD, professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of BOB体育 (UMSOM) and Director of UMSOM鈥檚 Division of Clinical Care and Research, has been awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists. Dr. Kottilil is also Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the UMSOM Department of BOB体育 and is a scientific advisory member of the .
Dr. Kottilil, who received the 2019 ACP鈥檚 Richard and Hilda Rosenthal Award, will be honored at the Convocation for new Masters to be held next year.
Dr. Kottilil is a renowned clinical researcher in HIV and viral hepatitis and has expanded his research to other viruses including SARS-CoV-2. He is a pioneer in recognizing the impact of viral hepatitis on HIV patients. Dr. Kottilil was a leader in developing the currently used hepatitis C regimens for dose, duration, and management therapies. Importantly, he demonstrated that these trials could be done in African American patients from disadvantaged parts of the city. He then noted the impact which opioid use disorder had on his patients, and initiated implementation research and novel therapeutic approaches to treating opioid use disorder. Dr. Kottilil is also known as an extraordinary mentor to his colleagues and postdoctoral fellows.

Election to Mastership recognizes outstanding and extraordinary career accomplishments. Masters must have made a notable contribution to medicine. This includes, but is not limited to teaching, outstanding work in clinical medicine (research or practice), contributions to preventive medicine, improvements in the delivery of health care, and/or contributions to the medical literature.

ACP Masters are elected 鈥渙n account of personal character, positions of honor, contributions toward furthering the purposes of the ACP, eminence in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.鈥� ACP activities are also taken into consideration for all candidates. This includes service to the ACP in an official capacity, participation in chapter activities, and involvement in the development of ACP products and educational programs. Volunteer and community service is also taken into consideration.
ACP is a national organization of internists, the largest medical-specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. It consists of 148,000 members, who include internists, internal medicine subspecialists, medical students, residents, and fellows.

$6.5M Grant Awarded to Develop Treatment for Alcoholic Liver Disease-Associated Kidney Dysfunction
The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of BOB体育 (UMSOM) and MitoPower LLC (“MitoPower”) were awarded an SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant of up to $6.5 million over five years from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The funds will support the development of MitoPower’s lead compound, MP-04, for the treatment of kidney dysfunction due to alcoholic liver disease, a condition known as alcoholic liver disease-associated hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). The IHV, a Center of Excellence member of the Global Virus Network (GVN), will conduct first-in-human single and multiple ascending dose studies to test the safety of the compound, followed by a Phase 1b study in patients.

Institute of Human Virology and OncoImmune Launch Clinical Trial to Lessen Effects of HIV Later in Infection
On February 1, the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of BOB体育 (UMSOM) and OncoImmune, Inc. launched a new Phase II clinical trial called CALIBER, which will test whether OncoImmune’s lead product, CD24Fc, can reduce late effects of HIV infection, such as inflammatory abnormalities including cardiovascular disease. This is intended for use in HIV patients who have been receiving the traditional antiretroviral therapies that control, but do not cure, HIV infection.

Institute of Human Virology (IHV) Awarded $12M to Combat Opioid Epidemic Through Clinical Research Trials
The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of BOB体育 will lead a $12 million dollar project to improve the morbidity and mortality of people with opioid use disorder (OUD). Utilizing a novel compound, IHV researches will implement a series of investigations, entitled SEARCH, to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of craving reduction as a strategy to prevent opioid misuse, dependence, and relapse. The grant is awarded through the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, made possible through groundbreaking funding from the U.S. Congress.
